Its official: Games will force your girlfriend to dump you. Well Ok, it’s not quite that bad, but research released this week has suggested that heavy amounts of gaming and other online activities can put a strain on a relationship.

Around 20% of women have dumped a partner directly because of the online gaming habits, MyVoucherCodes revealed. The research also suggests that 80% of women believe that their partners spend too much time on the computer in general.

Oddly enough, Call of Duty is the number one game that is likely to break up a relationship.

Research Mark Pearson Commented:

“While men are more likely to spend their time running recon with, scoring goals against or shooting at people from all over the world, women are just as to blame for the time they spend online for relationship breakups according to the study.

I’m no relationship expert, but it seems that as technology improves, our ability to interact with those around us lessens – hopefully these statistics will be the push people need to reassess the way they treat loved ones.”

We’re not so sure about all that, and we agree with Mr. Pearson – it’s hardly like women aren’t often ‘addicted’ to online social networking sites like Facebook and MySpace. Besides, too much of anything is normally bad for you, and like everything in life, gaming is an activity best enjoyed in moderation.

Still, maybe we’ll think twice next time we want to play a game of Call of Duty online, huh? We’re just surprised the title winning the crown of most common to destroy a relationship wasn’t the huge time sink that is World of Warcraft!

Following on from our earlier post this week, we’re going to take a look at the real gaming blockbusters this week, and which ones you should pick up if you’re not lucky enough to be able to grab all of them. If you’re looking for more casual games, scroll down to our previous post below to check out the stuff that the whole family will enjoy.

This year has been a pretty great year all round for gamers, but the last few months have seen some outstanding titles released. Here’s our list of games you really don’t want to miss out on over Christmas:

Modern Warfare 2: We can’t really say much about Modern Warfare 2 that hasn’t already been said, but if you love multiplayer shooters with lots of action, strategy and fun but without all the Halo related science-fiction stuff, Modern Warfare is a great choice for Christmas. If you’re not into online games, Modern Warfare’s single player campaign is brilliant but will be over by Boxing Day.

Dragon Age – Origins: Dragon Age is just about the opposite of Modern Warfare 2. There’s no online mode but the single player is nearly 60 hours long if you play through properly and with a new introduction for each of the player class and race combinations it’s got some replay value, as well. It’s available for all major consoles and the PC, though we found the game the most enjoyable on the PC.

Assassins’ Creed 2: The original scored highly in many magazines and blogs, but overall it was let down by repetition and a lack of imagination in the later stages of the game. The sequel has none of those problems though, and has turned into the game that everyone wished the original would be. If you liked the original but felt let down, or avoided it due to the problems noted in the reviews, you’ll be pleasantly surprised by this one. Plus, the various collectables and bonuses should keep you amused for a long time over Christmas.

Uncharted 2 – Amongst Thieves: It’s our own exclusive on the list so you won’t be playing Uncharted unless you own a PS3. If you do though, and you haven’t already rushed out and purchased this GOTY contender than Christmas is the perfect excuse to spend some time with this one. Its amazing story and beautiful graphics will keep you playing all over the Christmas holidays.

This week we’re continuing our Christmas theme, and why not? Christmas is a massive time for gamers, and some of the year’s biggest games get released between November and December in time for us all to rush to the shops and buy them for Christmas. 2009 has been a good year for gaming, so let’s take a look at what’s available for the casual market.

Gaming has certainly hit the mainstream in the last few years, so let’s take a look at games that should be a sure-fire hit for any family over the festive season:

EyePet: Strangely enough our first choice isn’t for the Wii or DS but the PS3 – a console more typically associated with more hardcore gaming. However, you just can’t get a game like Eye Pet on any other system. It uses the PS3 camera which you can buy in a bundle with the game if you don’t already own one.

The game basically plays like a Tamagotchi but one controlled by the movements of your body towards the screen. You can do things like feeding, playing and scolding the pet but all these actions are determined by how you move around in front of the screen making it great distracting fun for kids.

Lips: Singstar might have started the gaming karaoke craze but Lips has refined it. If you want to have a few hours in front of the TV at Christmas trying (and usually failing) to sing along to your favourite pop songs, Lips is certainly the number one choice. There’s a variety of different package available but the newest Number One Hits package with wireless microphones offers the best value for money and gaming experience, and you can even download new songs online via the XBOX Live Marketplace.

Wii Sports Resort: Nintendo fans probably already remember playing Wii Sports together as a family a few Christmases ago and having a bit of fun, though the limited range of sports available meant the game was quite quickly forgotten in favour of newer, bigger Wii games. Resort brings some new life to the series with a much wider range of sports including fencing and sky diving.

You can buy the game either alone or with the Wii Motion plus controller addon that makes your movements far more refined. However, you’ll need one Wii Motion plus for each controller to make the game fair, so this could end up costing you quite a bit of money!

Mario and Sonic at the Winter Olympic Games: Another Wii game and another sport collection, but this one differs from fairly large differences to Wii Sports Resort, even if you probably don’t need to be getting both this Christmas. It’s a great game if you’re going to play with four players and there are plenty of different sports on offer. You can even use the Wii balance board for some of them!

After covering some exciting and unexpected developments from the Microsoft camp we turn our attention over to Sony and the PlayStation brand. Sony’s conference was given in front of a truly massive 40 by 80 foot screen with Sony president Jack Tretton pronouncing that such visuals as displayed could only be possible on the PlayStation 3. After the usual sales figures and a nod to the continued success of the now decade-old PlayStation 2, some much newer hardware was announced.

PSP Go confirmed

There had been rumours of the PSP Go floating around the internet for over a week but now the console has finally been officially announced by Sony. The console is basically a new model for the PSP – it plays all of the same games as the original and it’s not a new system in itself. However, there are some quite massive changes to the design of the Go that makes it a larger step for Sony than the recently released PSP-3000 and older 2000 or ‘slim’ models.

Firstly, there’s no UMD drive – all games will be download through Sony’s PlayStation store. Secondly the system will come with a massive 16GB of internal memory. The whole system will be about half the size and nearly half the weight of the original PSP model.

Of course, most people already knew this already thank to leaks, but what was newly announced was the ‘Media Go’ application that replaces media manager and another app that do some sort of magic with your music playlists, although neither sounded particularly overwhelming.

Sony was careful to ensure gamers that the PSP Go is not a replacement for the PSP-3000, which many PlayStation fans have only purchased recently. The two systems will continue to be served with the same level of games and support, much like the Nintendo DS and DSi.

The price point is currently $250 with no price drop on the PSP-3000 which may makes the Go a rather expensive option for some considering that it’s essentially an upgrade in size and form rather than a brand new handheld.

Playstation Motion Control

Motion Control really seems to be the order of the week at E3, with Microsoft first announcing project Natal and now Sony bringing their new idea to the table. It seems like both companies are clamouring to replicate some of the massive success Nintendo has had with the control system.

Sony’s device isn’t full body like Microsoft’s but a controller similar to the Wii-mote. It looks a little like a wand from the cover of a generic fantasy book, with a blub on the top that can change colour. Sony mentioned the device is only a prototype and could change somewhat in development, but the company provided a demonstration that impressed many at the show.

The controller allows the Eye-Toy to overlay visual objects in your hand which you can then manipulate, anything from swords and guns to the obligatory tennis rackets and golf clubs. The level of precision displayed was exciting and the practical use was displayed in a tech demo of a strategy game. As with Microsoft’s motion sensing it’s really the games that will make or break the system.

Sony is touting a spring 2010 release date for the product.

God of War 3

Along with their hardware announcements, Sony had all of their big names out in force at E3, and what Sony conference wouldn’t be complete without God of War 3. Gamers were treated to real gameplay footage demoed live at the convention. The game will mark the last chapter in the trilogy which has been a huge success for Sony.

The demo included some nice touches including a fight with a harpy and some sort of massive lava monster with Kratos doing his usual charging around. All of the same mechanics for the first few games seem to have been kept on for the third, with a predictable mix of stylish fighting, combo linking and – of course – real time button sequences.

Tretton quipped that God of War wasn’t “just exclusive to the PS3, it’s only possible on the PS3”. Gamers will be experiencing the game for themselves when it’s released in March next year.

Assassins Creed 2

Due to hit the shelves on November 17th – the very same date as Left 4 Dead 2 – Assassin’s Creed 2 is shaping up to be a bigger and hopefully better game than the original. Although the trailer was shown during the Sony show, the game is not a PlayStation exclusive and is being developed for Sony, Microsoft and Windows markets.

The game is sticking with the sandbox style of the original but will hopefully fix some of the major criticisms of the original game, such as the repetitive nature of the missions. The good news on that point is that more content seems to be high on the priority list for the game with over 30 weapons, 17 mission types and several gameplay enhancements in the works.

Not much is known about the plot yet, but players take the role of a nobleman assassin called Ezio Auditore di Firenze whose family has been killed, so it’s going to be somewhat of a revenge story. The game is set 295 years after the first game in 1486 and will be set in around Venice, Rome and the Tuscan countryside.

PSP Line-up Announced

There hasn’t been a lot of information given out about the portable version of Gran Turismo yet. However, what’s been released has sounded very promising for racing fans. The game will include 800 cars, 35 tracks and 60 track layouts. There will also be an added emphasis on trading cars and playing with friends over Wi-Fi, which Sony have hinted will be a requirement in order to realistically collect all of the 800 cars the game has to offer. With racing games not being easy to make on the DS and the PSP only really seeing a few decent games in the genre, it will be nice to the series make a proper appearance.

The game will be released with the launch of the PSP Go in October this year. Other PSP announcements at E3 include Metal Gear Solid: Peace Walker and new Resident Evil Game. Various other big names were mentioned such as Soul Calibur, Jak and Dexter and Little Big Planet. Overall, the PSP looks like it’s finally starting to get some much needed attention from the company.

We’ll be bringing you a summary of the biggest news from the Nintendo show this Friday.

It’s rare for anyone in the videogame world to get excited by a movie license, and that pessimism is not without reason. We’ve had a few well thought out, even classic games come from movies such as the N64 masterpiece, Goldeneye. However, generally movie licences are tacked on, throw away rubbish that run through the movie’s plot while half attempting some sort of banal gameplay in the process. They are designed not as games but as money making endeavours and movie promotion tools. Most gamers steer clear of games that involve all but their favourite of films, and are often still disappointed even then.

Because of this, the coverage on the new Ghostbusters game is quite strange. Even stranger when you consider the development team behind the game has already made one terribly average movie to game conversion for the film Aeon Flux. You might argue that the film itself wasn’t exactly the best starting point for any developer, but Terminal Reality used all of the usual boring clichés and developed a game that nobody really enjoyed playing. Aeon Flex received an average score of around 40% from games journalists.

This time, Terminal Reality has just about all the help it can get. From many of the original characters voice acting to the creators of the franchise themselves penning the story, the licence has the best possible start in life. It’s not a guarantee for success by any means, but it certainly can’t hurt.

The game itself continues directly from the films and is set during thanksgiving in 1991. You join the Ghostbusters team as a rookie rather than playing as one of the original cast. This is a unique decision in terms of movie licences which nearly always cast the player as the lead character from the film. It’s easier this way for people to instantly connect with characters, although playing alongside the original Ghostbusters team rather than as one of the ‘classic’ members certainly has its appeal and it does explain why you are given all of the experimental weapons to ‘test’.

Along with these new weapons, many not seen in the films, you’ll also get a standard proton pack which you can use to trap various ghosts throughout the game. Special attention has been made by Terminal Reality to get this part just right as it’s such a massive part of the movies themselves and right now, it’s looking good. The idea of controlling the fine balance of the different proton streams does seem way more suited to the Wii control system than analogue sticks of the 360, however.

Graphically, the game is looking very impressive with some very realistic and engaging environments both outdoors in New York City and in the games highly detailed interiors. The Wii and PS2 versions developed by Red Fly Studio are understandably different visually; although rather than scaling back the graphics the game takes a different style that’s cartoonier and less realistic. Little is known about the DS version of the game although the developers have stated it’ll be more like the Ghostbusters games from the 80s and 90s rather than attempting to emulate the main game on the smaller screen.

It’s clear that Terminal Reality is approaching the licence carefully and with a great degree of common sense. However, the track record of the company isn’t great and there have been plenty of games in the past that tried to tread carefully – even those with the original creators and cast involved – that have been just as bad as the majority of movie licences. Let’s just hope it’s not another Superman 64.

Ghostbusters: The Video Game is out in June, 2009.
